Summertime Exploration with the Ocean in Mind
Is there anything more fascinating than learning about the natural world around us? There are so many interesting creatures in this world of ours that there’s always something new to learn. And lucky for us locals, there aren’t many better places anywhere to get up close and personal with the animals that live in our oceans than at the Newport Aquarium. Whether you’ve been before or you’re a first-time visitor, here’s a sample of what to expect on your trip.
Penguin Palooza
Of all the aquatic creatures out there, few are as entertaining as those loveable flightless birds, the penguin. The aquarium here is home to one of the most diverse collections of cold-weather penguins in the country. The exhibit is built to mimic the arctic climate these birds feel at home in, but don’t worry; the viewing area is kept at a comfortable temperature all year long.
Gator Alley
For something a little more fearsome, check out the alligator exhibit on display here. Two of the rarest gators in the world make their home here: a pair of white alligators named Snowball and Snowflake. Snowball is the bigger of the two, measuring in at a whopping eight feet long and weighing 175 pounds. An old Cajun superstition claims that gazing into the eyes of a white alligator brings good luck. Try it out and see if your luck changes.
Frog Bog
You’ve probably seen a frog or two in your day, but we guarantee you’ve never seen them as you will at the aquarium’s frog display. You’ll be able to see exotic species of frogs from all over the world in recreations of their natural habitats. There’s also plenty to learn here about why frogs are beneficial to our ecosystem, as well as the challenges they face due to environmental issues and what can be done to help.
Stingray Hideaway
In the paradise-like exhibit set up for the three species of stingrays that call the aquarium home, you’ll also see iguanas and colorful fish sharing the environment. But the stars of the show are the stingrays themselves, and these critters are quite the little entertainers. If they’re feeling especially playful, they may splash you with their fins. Feeling adventurous? You can pet a stingray in a special part of the
exhibit.
Shark Central
They’re known as some of the most ferocious predators of the deeps, but at the aquarium, you’ll also learn the vital role these magnificent beasts play in a healthy ocean environment. For the brave among us, you can go into the acrylic tunnels that run through the display and find yourself surrounded by sharks and other undersea creatures. If you’re especially bold, you can even stick your arm in the shark tank for a thrill you’ll never forget. All of these wonders of the natural world are waiting for you just around the corner. If you need help getting there, either in a new vehicle or in your current one with a new tune-up, come see our team. Visit Joseph Chevrolet today!
